Brood XIX, one of the largest broods of periodical cicadas, will emerge in the eastern United States, including parts of Virginia. These insects have spent the past 17 years underground, feeding on tree roots. They will now emerge to mate and lay eggs, creating a temporary boom in the cicada population.
Experts estimate that billions of cicadas will emerge in Virginia alone. They will be most noticeable in the central and western counties of the state. However, most Virginians will not see periodical cicadas in 2024. There are annual cicadas that emerge every year, and these may be confused with the periodical cicadas.
Periodical cicadas are harmless to humans and pets. However, their sheer numbers can be overwhelming, and their buzzing can be loud and disruptive. Residents in affected areas should be prepared for the cicada invasion, which is expected to last for several weeks.
